This is how I start all my paintings; it's called imprimatura. The oil paint wash (I use Transparent Earth Red from Gamblin thinned with mineral spirits) is used to begin my underpainting.⁣ In painting, imprimatura is an initial stain of color painted on a ground. It provides me with a transparent, toned ground, which allows light falling onto the painting to reflect through the paint layers.
